Welcome to the Frank Lovell World War 2 Diaries website.

This website complements the book containing the World War 2 diaries written by Frank Lovell, “Frank Lovell’s World War ll Diaries: The European War Theater Years”.

As a Chief Warrant Officer in the 60th Field Artillery Battalion within the 9th Infantry Division, Frank bore witness to some of the most monumental events of the 20th century. Frank Lovell kept a diary from 1940 until the end of his life in 1996. This book begins with an entry from June 6, 1944, when he first learns of the invasion in Europe, know as D-Day. It ends with a diary entry from September 14, 1945, the day he arrives home in Massachusetts. Well aware he was living during a period of major historical importance, Lovell believed it was his duty to record these events. The results offer the reader a unique perspective of an individual soldier’s view of his wartime experiences.

Included in the book are Frank Lovell’s eyewitness accounts of the 9th Infantry Division cutting off the Cotentin Peninsula in Normandy, the Battle of the Hedgerows, Operation Cobra, The Battle for St Lo, the closing of the Falaise Gap, the liberation of Belgium, the Battle of the Bulge, the Roer to Rhine River Drive, the liberation of the Nordhausen Concentration Camp, and the post-war Allied Occupation of Europe.

Also included are many WWll photos from Lovell’s private collection, which makes the book a unique piece of history.
